Mower won't stay running
Briggs Quantum 5 hp Powerpro engine. Engine starts and runs a few seconds then dies. Checked plug and cleaned air cleaner. It doesn't matter if it's primed or not, as it does the same thing, starts and runs maybe 5 to 10 seconds and dies. I'm thinking carb, but thought I'd get some advice.

Hello bruiser!
Does it start right back up? Do you have spark when it stops? Sounds like you might need to clean the carb, but check for spark when it dies first to give a better idea of where we need to look.

Yes, it'll start right up and run a few seconds. There's no missing or surging. It's just like it runs out of gas. It'll keep starting and running a few seconds until I get tired of pulling the rope. I told my neighbor I was having trouble, and he said his mower did the same thing. He said he drained the tank, and got fresh gas from a different place. He said it has run like a champ since then. So I wonder if there is some silt or something in the tank? I might try his "fix" and see if it works.

A quick check to see if its a fuel or spark problem,(sure sounds to me like fuel) is to have some fresh gas in a small safe container, start the mower with the air filter removed, when it begins to die, put a few drops of gas in the throat of the carb, if it sputters back to life then you have a fuel delivery problem. While it is best to always use fresh fuel, I have yet to find gas, (unless contaminated with water or other substance) to be a fix. Most likely when your neighbor drained his tank, did he change the filter clean it blow out the fuel line or possibly just dislodged some obstruction.
First try to run it with the gas cap removed or barely started on. The cap has a vent which if not working will prevent gas from flowing, if still no go...
With gas in the tank and the gas cap removed, you can remove the fuel line at the carb and see if you have fuel coming out. If not try gently pressurizing the tank by blowing in the filler neck. If neither results in gas at the line to the carb, then you have a blockage in the line, check the filter and lines.
If you are getting gas to the carb, and the nursing of fuel keeps it running then the carb itself will need attention.
If you get to that point and need more help, comon back cuz your in the right place...

It's running again. I did 3 things. Which one "fixed" it is anyone's guess, or maybe it was a combo of things. Replaced the plug, replaced the air filter, drained the gas and put in fresh gas. It fired up, ran smooth for a few seconds, then developed a miss for a couple of minutes, smoothed back out, and ran fine while I mowed the yard. Maybe I dislodged something in the fuel system when I drained the gas. Guess I'll see how long it stays running.

Yep, sounds like you have something in the carb bowl. It only takes a few minutes to remove the carb bowl and dump it out and clean it out. If it has water or trash in it, it will cause your problem. It may come back again, but if you're lucky, it sucked it through, or drained it out the throat when you had it tilted to drain the fuel.
