Cleaning underneath the lawnmower?

I was wanting to know, what is the best way to clean the wet grass undeneath the Lawnmower? I am asking because I have a full tank of gas, and I am not sure if I can lift the mower up without leaking gas or causing harm to the engine.

Do you have an overhead valve engine or not? If you're not sure, look for the engine identification numbers, post them and we'll get back. FYI, OHV engine; carburetor side up, L-head engine; muffler side up. Neither should be propped up more than a 45 degree angle. Scrape the grass build up with a putty knife.
