How did you test for spark? Do you have a multimeter?
Also if you can post with the model of your trimmer, it will be a big help.
If your certain the spark plug is good, check your on/off switch with a meter if able.
Post back and let us know that info.....

It is a ryobi 790r 31cc engine type TN4031UB24RA I tested the plug by gaping it and saw no spark. I don't have a multimeter to test it.

It's a pain in the neck, but the only way to isolate the ignition coil as the suspect is to remove the small wire that attaches to the coil. This is the kill wire and this wire itself or the switch could be defective. By removing the wire you isolate the coil alone. If you still have no spark once removed and you know the coil to flywheel airgap is correct (.012"), then you have a bad coil. If bad, expect to pay around $35 for the coil.
