HELP! Mower barely runs then quits

My son was cutting the grass and said the blade came off the mower- We just replaced it about 3 weeks ago- after we put it back on and started the mower it now barely runs. Something seems to be rattling inside and acts like it is going to completely die when running. After we stopped it it still has something that seems to be loose inside the casing near the bottom of the motor. It is a Murray- 22" - 4.0HP Quatro Briggs and Stratton Motor. Any ideas would be helpful. Our mower died and this is the one we borrowed last month.

Thanks,

DW

Hello DW!

Check the blade adapter. It might be cracked/broken/loose.

You likely have a sheared flywheel (ignition timing) key. A sheared key will cause a ping, or knock, if you will, as the ignition timing will be off. The blade on a rotary mower doubles as a flywheel and if the inertia is upset it will shear the key.
