Sounds like ignition trouble. This engine has points & condensor as well as an ignition coil. If it were mine, I'd do away with the points & condensor by way of replacing the old coil with a new solid state coil. The new coil fits up exactly the same way as the old. You can but don't necessarily have to remove the points & condensor, although I recommend this. The Briggs part number is 496914 which includes an instruction sheet to do the job and sells for around $32.
