compression???

sears old junk.... techemseh 3.5 or so..... compression what should it be????
i tested it with the throttle open and got a reading of 50 3x's.

sooo what should it be.

possibly the valves are not seated. they should both be set at .010
the rings could be worn out also. also check the head gasket.

Mostly the factory won't tell you just what the compression should be because the numbers are so variable. I DO know from personal experience on many-many Briggs and Tecumseh engines that 50 psi is some low. Assuming your compresson testor is accurate I would want to see a reading on the plus side of 80 psi. I can typically get up to 100 on a good engine with a swift pull of the rope. Usually you have trouble getting an engine to start with a compression reading less that 80. You also did right by taking the reading with the throttle at full open. If you don't do that your readings can be off on the low side.
