Carburetor rebuild neccessary?

Carburetor rebuild neccessary?

I have a sears model 502.251220 rear engine riding lawnmower with a 10 HP tecumseh engine model #- 143.951010. When it came in it sounded like it was running with the choke closed...so I took the air filter off (which was pretty dirty) and it seemed to run O.K. So the next day I replaced the air filter and pre-filter. It ran O.K. for a while, then started blowing black smoke and finally died. I'm going to rebuild the carburetor...just wondering, what else would cause these symptions?

A carb problem is pretty much all it could be. You may have a bad float, those carbs were notorious for bad floats.
