Problem with riding mower

I have a Murray with a Briggs and Stratton riding mower. It is about 6 years old and has run pretty well. Some sort of cable in the front disengaged this weekend when I was using it. The lever that contrls the blade has slack and feels as though something snapped. The cable is housed inside of the unit, so I am not sure if it is something I can fix at home or need to haul it to a repair shop. Any help would be appreciated. The mower is running but the blades won't cut.

did the spring on the deck come off. there is a spring that goes from a lever on the mower to the deck that pulls the blade brake back. is that disconnected. let
us know. one more thing, does the engaging handle have any resistance or will the blades engage or disengage.

What model unit is it? And size of deck?
