MTD push mower with Briggs& Stratton won't shut down

I have a MTD mower with a 4.5 hp B&S that won't shut down when the engine control lever is released. The engine slows but does not quit unless I put strong pressure with my thumb on the lever at the end of the control cable. The cable is fine and I removed the cover and cleaned around the spring mechanism.. I can't seem to find any info on how the engine control works or how to fix my problem. The mower is only 4 months old.
Thanks for any help.

Hello joeymon1!

Remove the cover so that you can see the kill-switch where the cable connects. There is a black wire that clips onto a small plastic piece. This piece has a metal tab that points down toward a metal arm that should contact it when the cable is released, and disconnect when the cable is pulled. Bend this tab accordingly to make the connection when the cable is released.
