Craftsman 6.5 hp self-propelled lawn mower

The right wheel is loose. Apparently the gear provides the pressure on the height adjustment and secures the wheel in place. I have removed the locking ring, but I can't get the gear off to try and tighten it. Used a gear puller to no avail. The parts diagram shows the wheel gear should come off the drive shaft, but I can't get it to budge. Help!

Hello Don!

Sounds like you need some penetrating oil, and maybe some sandpaper to clean the shaft up. Does it wiggle, or maybe move the other direction at all? What is the model# of the mower? If it starts with 917, it is an AYP product and probably has a woodruff key holding the gear on the shaft, along with a C clip. If it starts with 502, it is a Murray product and just has the retaining clip.
