broken choke shaft

I picked up a 1991 Lawn Chief mower (no model number found) with a Briggs engine (model 124702, type 3123 01, code 91010325). Both the choke and the throttle shafts were frozen. The choke shaft is plastic with a unusual top that was pushed by the control cable. It seems that the top cracked off so I need to replace the shaft. I am not clear how remove the choke plate so I can pull the shaft out. Is there a trick to this? I don't see any screws as there are on the throttle plate. What am I missing?

All I have to go by is the parts list from Briggs which you can find here http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BS...gineType=3123#
It looks as though the shaft has a slot in it which the valve slides into. There may be a tab or notch that holds it in. I havent ran across a plastic one I had to remove so I have no first hand.

The choke plate just pulls out with a pair of small pliers. Then the shaft will slip out through the top.
