20 hp briggs governor replacment
Briggs model 407700 vtwin 20hp engine. It was over reving and took it apart and the governor assembly was broke. I ordered a new governor gear and im not exactly sure how the pin, governor, and cap fit it properly. Has anyone changed this part and whats the proper placement of the part.

Ive already seen the parts brakdown. It doesnt help. It just shows the parts. It doesnt show assembly of the governor. Has anyone replaced a governor that could help me put it back togeter.

I've replaced lots of governors, but I can't say I've ever even taken one out of that engine. Governor replacement isn't really that common of a job, but surely someone has done it on this engine. I'll look at a microfiche and see what I can tell about it.

The gang is right joshhoward,407700 is the starting of the model serise of your engine.Which might have as many as 20 to 30 or more differant engines in it.If you get one little thang wrong,you risk chances of blowing your $1200.00-$1800.00 engine from kingdom come.And I know that you don't want that to happen.But with both the model and type numbers we can not only tell you how to put the goverenor gear in correctly,but also how to saftly check it to see if it's set right.

I've never had to replace such on this series engine in my 26-years in the business but the order of parts will be as follows: Thrust washer then governor gear then retainer clip then governor cup. I assume that the cup snaps into place or is merely held in place by the flyweights of the gear. Any adjustments will be made externally by way of the governor shaft and arm. You loosen the governor arm, rotate this counter-clockwise and then rotate the governor shaft clockwise then tighten the arm clamp back down.
