Question about 2-cycle oil

Earlier in the season I bought an string trimmer / edger with a 2 stroke engine. In reading the manual I seem to recall a reference to using a particular type of 2 cycle oil in the fuel.

Do different 2 stroke engines use different types of oil in the fuel mix? When I mix gas / oil, do I have to "match" 2-cycle oil to my engine?

Thanks in advance for unwrapping me from around this axle- -

Dave

If it stated a particular BRAND, it was probably by agreement with the oil manufacurer. Only thing to be aware of with 2 cycle mix is to make sure of the oil to gas ratio. Someday maybe all 2 cycles will run on the same ratio (I hope) Good luck.

Most 2 cycle engines run a 32:1 ratio.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure mine is 40:1, but I'll check the manual to be sure.

That raises another question, tho: know any good tricks for measuring and mixing? One thimble full of oil and 40 thimbles full of gas is a little chunky. Most measuring containers don't go down to one ounce if they go up to 40, for instance.

Go to a dirtbike shop, you can find a plastic measuring beaker with ratio's broken down, no guess no mess

Oh and I myself, after breakin period using suggested ratio, run all my 2 strokes at between 40 and 45 to 1
