briggs carb service question ??
hello,
i have a 3 1/2 hp briggs model 91252, type 1049e1, code 0208283a. the carb needs to be serviced as the engine will only run with the choke on. even then it is searching, reving high and low. if i turn the choke off the engine dies. this engine has the gas tank mounted to the bottom of the carb and has no bowl. i have never worked on this type before. any tips on removal of the carb and what to clean would be a great help. thanks in advance.

There is only a diaphram, (replace it, less than 5 bucks) between the tank and carb. The carb has a pickup tube and overflow. The pickup will have a screen in the bottom, clean that seperate if you plan to soak it in cleaner as most of those are plastic. Also be sure to clean the tank well including the overflow resevoir. If there is a mixture screw, note the turns out, then remove it also to clean.

i removed the carb today. i disassembled it. removing the cover over the diaphram and the jet screw. i think the problem was that there is a screen that looks like a thimble that slides over the main jet tube on the bottom of the carb and that was covered with rust flakes. i cleaned that untill it looked new. i then blasted the complete carb body with gumout spray putting the tiny hose into all the holes in the body making sure it came out the other side. i also ran a stiff thin piece of wire through the holes of the main jet on the bottom of the carb and the small jet screw i removed. this carb could not look any cleaner if it was new. i then went over to my local ope dealer and picked up a carb kit for it. original briggs. in this kit there were tons of things but only 3 where for my carb. the gasket from carb to block and from carb to tank. and the rubber diaphram. i installed the diaphram reinstalled the carb and put in fresh gas. it fired right up. now it runs with the choke off but it is not smooth. has a little stutter and popping and goes high low. there are no adjustment jet screws on my carb. there is 1 jet screw on the side of the carb but it is not adjustable. it is set all the way in where it was. no other adjustments anywhere. any clues on what i should look for ? thanks ???

Did you get the diaphragm and gasket on in the correct order? (gasket on carb side, diaphragm on tank side).

Ahh, sorry. I didn't pay enough attention to the model # or I would have realized you had a horizontal shaft engine. This carb can be very difficult to repair at times...other times they clean up and work fine first try. I would reccomend going to an automotive parts store and get a pail of dip style carburetor cleaner. Napa sells it's own brand, and chemdip and berrymans also make it (available at most auto parts stores). Then following directions, clean it again and then use compressed air and a rubber tipped blower nozzle to blow out the passages in the carb. I would also reccomend removing the main jet (under the screen cover you mentioned) for cleaning prior to dipping the carb.
