snowblower gearbox

I have a Sears craftsmen 5hp self propelled snowblower. Probably about 20 years old. When I start it up and go to put the auger on, the auger does not turn and it immediately stalls. I ran it a few days ago with no problems. The person i got this from said they had this problem a few years ago and they had to put oil in the front gear box. I want to try this myself but am unsure of the steps and what type of oil ( motor oil or any type of gear oil?). we have special oil that they use for gearboxes on machinery at my workplace. Any thoughts. thanks.

Cheese or Snoman can prolly tell ya better what oil ta use, but I am pretty sure ANY oil is better than NO oil

If you get your model # from unit, you can most likely find an owners manual that you could reference.

On a standard type of cast iron gear box I use an 80w90 weight gear oil but not knowing the type of gear box you have, it would be best to call Sears with your model number and they can tell you the exact type you need. The reason I'm saying this is there are numerous ones out there for the different styles of boxes now. Some are aluminum and are completely sealed and require a special oil/grease combo. Sorry for not giving you the info you wanted to see.
