Battery runs down sometimes

My neighbor has a 175 john deere lawn tractor with a kawasaki engine, I forgot the horsepower but with PTO. When she starts it sometimes the battery seems to be run down and needs to be charged. We replaced the battery maybe near the end of last season and the battery was removed and put in the basement on a shelf with a battery maintainer. Is there a way of checking to see if the battery is charging while the engine is running and what could be causing the battery to drain. It has a new ignition key switch. Thanks in advance for your help. dave

Hello Dave!

Do you have a voltmeter? With the engine running at full throttle, test the voltage at the battery. If it is around 13 volts DC or better, then it's charging.
