Craftsman riding mower

The other day I stopped my riding mower (18 hp, 5 years old) to fill up on gas then it would not start. Replaced selenoid, starter, and battery. When restarting the mower it would barely turn then stop on the compression cycle. I took the spark plug out and the motor turns over with ease. Re-install spark plug and tried starting the mower with my truck battery. The motor still sticks on the compression cycle. Could it be a malfunctioning decompressor or could my valves need adjusting? Please help. Thanks

Yes, it sure sounds as though the Mechanical Compression Release (MCR) is not functioning. Post back with the engine #'s and I'll let yu know if it is common to your engine.
