80's MTD transaxel repair

I've got a MTD serial#:41-028-3668, model#:147-812-135/A077D
18-44 4speed IC.
It will go into reverse but not into any forward gear. I backed up, tried to go forward in 1st-nothing
same in 2,3,&4. Then the drivebelt snapped. When pushing back to it's parking slot I noticed that the rear wheels would turn in reverse but would lock up in the forwared gears. Anyone have an Idea what the problem is and what the $$$ to fix? Is this a diy repair? {I hope} If needed Locations of affordable used trannys?

That's got a Peerless 2300 series tranny and is quite easy to service (coming from a mechanic, mind you). I'd say you have trouble with the shifter rods inside the tranny. A disassembly will be in order to determine.
