Question Excessive Priming

I've a Craftsman edger with a B&S 3 1/2 HP engine with the little round
bulb primer. The instructions say to prime the engine with three pushes
on the primer. Three pushes doesn't start the engine. After about 20
times, the engine starts and purrs along. What could be the cause and
repair? I bought the edger new about a year ago and it has always had
this priming issue. It is just a little irritating pushing the bulb 20 times to get the engine started.

There are check valves in the carburetor behind the primer bulb. If they aren't working properly, you may have to prime a lot. Also, if the primer bulb itself is no longer sealing against the carb body, or is has a hole in it, it could do the same.

OK, thanks. The primer bulb just screws off, right?

No, it should be held in place with a retainer clip that has a tab on each side that must be pushed in to get the bulb and retainer out.
