Help with Poulan Chain Saw recoil spring.

Hi folks,
I have a Pouland 42cc chain saw and the starter rope broke and when i removed the rope housing the recoil starter spring popped out and i am having one heck of a time rewinding it and reinstalling it. Actually im not to sure how it goes in, as there is a round part on one end for a pin and a hook on the other end. I have tried to rewind it by hand and just cant do it properly. Is there some special tool or something to help with this. Im really a rookie doing this so any help you may offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Billtire!

You might be better off taking it to a small engine shop and have them put it back in for you. Otherwise, winding it by hand is the only way I know of. To figure out how it goes in, the end on the outside of the coil will hook into a spot on the recoil spring housing, and the end on the inside of the coil will hook onto a matching spot on the spool.
