Tecumseh loses power when hot???

I've got a H35 (3.5 hp horizontal shaft) Tecumseh on a crappy old MTD chipper/shredder that runs great until it gets up to temp. It then bogs down and starts to stall under load. I have to choke it to keep it going, but it's useless for doing any work.

I was thinking maybe a valve not seating properly or a leaking gasket.

Any thoughts?

Loosen the gas cap and see if that is the problem due to cap vent being plugged.

I may be new here but what is this guy's problem? Always using exclamation points and offers no help. Why is he here?

Agreed, no help was offered and the post has been edited.

I agree with Mike, the gas cap vent may be (probably is) plugged.

Thanks all.

Well, I tried the gas cap and there's no change.

It seems that for the first minute it runs ok. Then it starts to bog down under load. That lasts for several minutes and then it finally wants to stall and I have to give it choke to keep it going.

To me it sounds like a heat related problem (all fins are clear). Almost like something warping or not seating correctly.

Would a leaking head gasket cause this symptom? Maybe the leak opens up as it gets hot?

I'm just guessing here.

Thanks.

My next thing to check would be the valve clearances. Sounds like they may be too tight.
