21hp Briggs Twin on Murry Deck With Starter Problem
Hello all and Cheese! This issue is so close to the previous thread that I started to raise the issue in that post but was affraid it would interfere with his post. My neighbor's starter would not turn his 21 hp Briggs over. There was a click as the key engaged the Solenoid but no turn of the wheel. 13.75V at the battery. 13V across the solenoid so I figured he had an armature problem. When we opened it up we found the pinion gear hung in the flywheel gear. It was deformed but droped away easily. We laid it on the ground and put the jumper cables on it and it seemed to run fine but of course I couldn't tell if the RPM's were ok or if it actually had any turning power. We put a completely new top assembly on the starter and put it back together. The starter turned the flywheel a couple of times and then sounded as though the battery was low. We jumped it with the truck but there was NO change. We had only 6V on the starter when the key was turned. After charging all night the neighbor then put a new solinoid on it but it didn't help plus he said that the starter had started smoking? What is my next step? I have a new starter I can put on for him but am I going to damage it? $109.95 is a lot to risk! The 15amp fuse is OK but we put a new one on anyway? CHEESE hope family is OK and Biz is good. Ron

Hello Ron!
As suggested, check and clean the connections at the battery and the frame. Make sure the battery is ok, especially if it's more than a couple years old. A battery can show a nice charge, but if it has a bad cell, the voltage will drop considerably when a load is put on it. If you showed 6volts with the starter engaged, and the engine wouldn't turn, then it sounds like the battery is holding up ok. You shouldn't hurt the new starter as long as you don't overheat it by overworking it. If the engine has a valve clearance issue, gas in the oil, or a belt trying to engage, it will be hard for the starter to turn it. Can you tunr the engine by hand without too much effort?
Family is great, and so is business! I hope it is likewise for you and yours! Things have been getting even more hectic around here (if that's possible). I took on a partner and now we're servicing tractors, forklifts, spotter trucks, etc... As well as small engines and the flooring business! This guy is good though...one of the area's best diesel and hydraulics mechanics and has factory training on the latest Hyster equipment. On top of that, he also happens to be my best friend.
You staying swamped with the mower work? Doing any service work for people ouside of the church family yet? I bet word about you is getting around pretty quick!

Nothing floating in the oil, no smell, no discharge through the pipe. The fellow tells me that it was a bit hard to start but cranked and ran well. He didn't hit anything just shut it down to move a limb and when he tried to start it, it didn't do anything? The starter gear was deformed but had only disfigured 4 teeth? I found it hung in the flywheel teeth. I turned the flywheel before removing it and it turned easily with good compression. I told my neighbor that I thought the battery was part of the problem but dismissed that when I found good voltage? I learn a lot of this stuff and then it goes away...where I do not know?? For grins here is what I intend to do: CHECK the ground and try it; REPLACE the battery and try it; PULL the starter, Test it, Repair it or Replace it??? I guess my basic problem is that I don't have enough experience to troubleshoot quickly. I'd loose my hat if I had to do this for a living! I admire you guys...
Cheese, your right the word has gotten out pretty good and I have agreed to do a few jobs but only for an exchange. They pay me in old equipment and it has worked out well. I should have plenty stock to fix over the winter to be able to put in folks hands in early spring. I've repaired and sold several of the nicer items this year to cover my parts cost and so far I'm still a little ahead. I've been giving the idea of a non profit organization some thought? It would be really great if I could setup a small training program for a few high school students and hire them for some period during the training? We have NO small engine training here in the capitol????? I can't believe it!!!) I'll keep you posted but for now I guess I'll keep it small>>>>> I have a loooooot to learn!
