Engine backfires

I have a Wheel Horse with a 12 hp kohler engine (70s model ) that keeps backfiring through the exhaust. I tryed to adjust the carb, but it does no good. Any idea what causes this. Thanks.

May be clogged spark arrestor or clogged muffler. Give that a check out. Good Luck!!

Hello rhb52!

Backfiring on this engine is usually caused by one of two things, either the engine isn't getting enough fuel (carb restriction) or the points need cleaning, adjusting, possibly replacing.

Another less likely possibility is a valve seat loose or sticking valve.
