MTD transaxle shear pin?

MTD transaxle shear pin?
The transaxle on my 14-year-old 38" MTD quit working abruptly. Shifter works fine but no gear can be engaged. The linkage is intact and the shifter rod moves in and out of the case just as it should. The rear wheels can be freely (too freely) spun in either direction without creating any sounds which would indicate that something inside has come loose or broken. The way it quit, no noise before or after, leaves me to believe that somewhere in there is a shear pin which has given up the ghost. Before I pull and disassemble he transaxle, I thought that it would be a good idea to check here so see if anyone knows if there IS a shear pin inside. Yeah, I know that it's an old mower, but I just finished a total rebuild and it looks great and runs super except for the current problem. Any help appreciated.

Did you verify that the belt is in fact turning the tranny pulley? If so, check the pulley itself. It is either keyed to the tranny input shaft, or splined and the key/splines may have stripped. There is no shear key in the tranny, although there are things that can break or fall apart.
