Craftsman 4 cycle engine 6HP, need Tecumseh Cross-Reference

This is an old machine I've been rebuilding off an old riding tractor. I have the Tecumseh Technician's Handbook, and I need the Craftsman cross reference. This model is not listed in the cross reference charts in the back of the manual.

On the engine there is a plate with the model #: EDIT: 143.1960(2)2

I know somebody has the equivalent, because when I ordered the manual I gave them the model #, and they found it in this handbook.

Are you sure that's the correct #? I can't find it anywhere, not even on the Sears site...What's the model # of the tractor?

That is extremely weird, becuase I had a list of engine parts yesterday. Now I try to get it again, and the site has no record of it! Good thing I printed the list.

Its funny, because the same thing happened two weeks ago.

Anyway, here is the 4 pages I printed:

http://web.rulex.net/smextreme/engine/

Hope this help you in identifying the engine! I have no idea what the tractor model # is, I might be able to get it in september, when I go back to school, the tractor is junk, so I took the engine out of it.

PS, as of writing this post, it now shows up in the sears parts site. weird.

143.196022 is the number on page one of your pages which differs from what you posted.
The only way I recall being able to cross reference a Craftsman Tecumseh was on the listing for the engine part #. This is usually included on the parts listing for the equipment it was mounted on.

I don't know if Tecumseh stamps any numbers other than on the shroud, but you should be able to identify it with the manual.

This is a service manual, http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf
it may differ from your tech handbook...???

I already have that that service manual. I just called it by its real name. "Tecumseh Technician's Handbook".

I've been able to use the manufacturers parts listing on Parts lookup here: http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp ("EMPART") to get some information on the carb, magneto, and starter parts, becuase the part numbers are listed on the sears website.

Sorry for the typo at the beginning of the post. In september i'll look for the tractor model number and cross reference with the engine on the parts site. Thanks for your help.

On page 1 chapter 1 of that "Technicians Handbook" it explains the coding of ID #'s. Also says the "spec" # is used in determining correct parts. I think the fact your model # is a 143.000000, is due to the fact that that model or engine, was made only for craftsman by tecumseh.

Tecumseh's site is a bit lax but they do have some manuals. Knowing the orientation of your engine and gathering info, check some of the manuals at their site or contact them directly.

I went to the Sears site and plugged in you model number for the tractor. On the "Seat Assembly & Grille" parts list the engine is listed as a 143.196022. That crosses to a V60-70189G.
