Knocking sound

I was given an old Craftsman riding mower with a 12 hp Briggs. When I start it there is a slight knocking.

Should I use a different oil? I am using 10w-30.

Thanks!

Use SAE 30 instead of the 10-30, but this may not get rid of the knock. Often times, the engine bolts work loose and the engine will make a knocking sound on startup, throttle up, when blades engaged, and when shut off. Tightening the engine mounting bolts will solve the problem. If the knock is truley and internal knock, it's probably a balancer or rod which would require disassembly and inspection/replacement to repair.
