Exclamation Craftsman 15HP Lawnmower

I just recently inherited this riding lawnmower from my father. The only thing on it thats needs fixing that I can't seem to figure out is a part of the starter. I need to know how to get that plastic pinion gear off of the top of the starter. Somehow it did not engage properly, I am assuming, and it just stripped all the teeth off of my gear. Any help would be greatful.

Briggs and Stratton I/C Gold 15HP OHV
Model # - 28N707
Type - 0160 01 (if this means anything)
Lawnmower Model # - 917.257643

There is a number stamped on the case of the starter, if you need it just say so and I will go out and get it.

There are two possible ways the starter is made (there is a third, but it hasn't been used in probably 25 years or more). The way yours is probably made is...a "C" clip on the top of the starter shaft. You can tap the round disc downward and use a small screwdriver to pry the clip off, then remove the disc on the top of the starter and remove the gear. The other method used by briggs is a roll pin that goes through the starter shaft. If this is the case, drive it out with a 1/8" punch and the drive assembly will come right off.

I thought that was a roll pin, but I smacked it with my punch and a hammer before I posted and it didn't come out. After reading your post I just hit it harder and it came right out. Thanks for the tip cheese!!
