Question

FOR PAST MONTH WHEN ENGAGING THE PTO MOWER, THE ENGINE LOSES POWER (SHUTS DOWN). THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP IT RUNNING IS WITH THE CHOKE CLOSED. HAVE REPLACED FUEL FILTER, SPARK PLUGS, & HAVE USED CARB CLEANER.

IT'S A 4YR OLD BRIGGS & STRATON 18 HP, HAS CUT A LOT OF GRASS (4 ACRES). (READY FOR A NEW ONE.. BUT) NEED TO KEEP THIS ONE RUNNING.

ANY ADVICE?

Hi:ANISSA

Your post included the MAGIC WORDS!

"THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP IT RUNNING IS WITH THE CHOKE CLOSED."

Keeping the choke closed restrictes the air but it also creates a powerful suction to draw fuel through the main feed of the carb.

There are other holes in a carb that need to be used for a balanced fuel flow. Your carb is therefore restricted.

Either a restriction in a fuel line or the carb. Most likely the carb.

The carb will need to be disassembled, cleaned out in carb cleaner and rebuilt with a new carb kit.

Try this first:
Pull the fuel line off the carb and observe the fuel flow volume. It should flow freely and continuously for several minutes to be correct. If not, check for a restriction in the fuel line or from the fuel tank.

If this test is okay, rebuild or have the carb rebuilt at a local lawn mower repair shop.

Anissa,While you have the fuel line off, remove the nut on the bottom of the carb float housing. This will be on the very bottom of the carb and will probably be a 1/2 inch nut. This will be a brass screw and may have a couple of small, hard to see if stopped up,holes in it.Be careful if there is an adjusting screw and soak clean. You may use a paper clip or something to clean out the small hole or holes. This may not be the problem but is a very small test that may avoid a total carb rebuild. There is not to much to this carb so dive in......
