Rewind Spring

Rewind Spring
The re-wind spring on my Ryobi 765r trimmer broke and I have purchased a new replacement. This is a small cannister spring. However, the new spring does not stay in place, slips and looses retention. I have re-installed this spring 3 times and it still does not work. It seems there is no firm retention for the inner end of the spring, hence it keeps slipping out of the small slot. I would hate to replace the trimmer due to a $5.00 spring.
has anyone done this and what is the trick to replacing this spring?

Hello jack r!
Sounds like the problem may be the piece that the spring connects to rather than the spring itself. If it's the inner end, then I'd take a close look at the slot in the rope spool where the spring connects and also check to see if the spool has excess movement up and down while in place. Maybe you could bend a little bit of a better hook in the end of the spring to hold in place better?
