wouldn't start/idles rough and backfires

I have a cub cadet that I used without a problem on Tuesday. Now its Saturday and I go to mow the lawn and when i turn the key....nothing. So, I jump the battery and it starts. As soon as i remove the jumper cables it starts idling very rough and backfires a bunch. I turned it off...afraid of what might happen. Any ideas???? how can it just change so quickly??

A battery can go bad all of a sudden. Usually it doesn't work that way, but it happens. It sounds like yours has shorted internally and won't even keep the fuel shutoff solenoid open. You could try charging it, but if it's over 2 years old, I'd be thinking about replacing it.
