Setting Timing for 15 hp Briggs&Stratton

I have to set the timming on my 15 hp briggs & stratton engine (from my craftsman ridding lawn mower) and I have no idea how. the model no. for the mower is 917.259341 and the engine model no. is 28N707 type no. is 0173-01. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Nwkthompson

what have you done to it, taken the whole engine apart.....crank, piston and rod out....or just the flywheel? if it was just the flywheel, its got a flywheel key, little peice of alluminum designed to shear. check it for wear, and replace if neccesary, insert into slot, line up slot in flywheel and press or lightly hammer on. or if the engine was taken apart, it has timing marks on the cam and crank.

nwkthompson,

As V8 has pointed out; the timing on these engines are not adjustable. The timing is fixed and unless there is mechanical failure with crank or cam gearing there is no adjustment to be made unless your flywheel key is sheared. Is it possible that you're having valve trouble?

God Bless,
