Starting a tractor with 12-volt battery

Can I use a 12-volt car battery to jump-start a lawn tractor with the small-type 12-volt battery?

Can I jumper across the tractor solenoid connections to start the tractor/test the solenoid?

Yes, to both. Beware that you may have a defective/misadjusted safety switch...from the sounds of your post.

I tried testing the switch continuity but it seems OK. Why the "beware"?

Safety. It's there to protect you and others.

I just don't like to see people spend their hard earned money on parts that they don't need. When it comes to an electrical (starting circuit, in this case) issue a systematic diagnosis is in order to isolate the actual problem...it may just be a safety switch.
