B&S 14.5hp will not crank
1990 B&S 14.5 OHV motor will not crank over. It is installed in a Montgomery Wards Signature 2000 Elite lawn tractor.
I had the tractor on a charger overnight.
the starter clicks and engine moves about 1/8" of an
inch.
Tried this with Spark plug in and out.
When I remove the starter from the motor, it spins freely. I can also manually turn the engine using one hand. it's stiff, but moves. I pulled the head off, and I can see the piston move up and down as well.
Could I just have a weak starter?

so it does the same, plug in and out....sounds like valves are ok. make sure the connections are good, then make sure the starter gear on the starter is good, and the ring gear on the flywheel is good. does the starter work alright when off? the flywheel turns over tight.....make sure the magneto hasn't slipped and is rubbing. also make sure the battery actually holds a charge. what cranking amp as well?

How is the condition of the gear at the end of the starter drive? If it's bad, it can bind and jam the starter.

Don't assume the battery is good just because it was charged. Have it tested for voltage and amperage. Most automotive chain stores can do this for you. Also, be absolutely certain that each cable end (6 total) is good and clean.

Starter works great when pulled off. the gear is in great shape.
no diference if plug is in or out. I will have to get the battery checked out though.
Can I jump the mower with my truck or will it be to much? I have 900+ Cranking amp battery in the truck. Can I place the jumper cable right to the starter?

The coil armature should be .010" from the flywheel magnet. A business card or matchbook cover works well for this if you don't have a brass feeler guage.

Take off the cover, and the flywheel. The key is the tiny long piece of metal that is inbetween the crankshaft and the flywheel. Sometimes its only visibially sheared if you take the flywheel off.

If the flywheel hasn't been removed before, and the engine hasn't come to an abrupt halt (I mean ABRUPT), then I wouldn't worry about the flywheel key just yet.
What's the history on this mower? Was it in storage for a long time? Did it just die and now you're trying to get it fixed? You could have a fuel delivery problem, valve problem, ignition problem, etc...
Have you tried a new plug? Is the plug sparking?

sorry about the long delay. unfortunatly I do not know the history of the mower. I was told by the previous owner that it just would not start any more.
I have checked for spark a few days ago (still part of this repair) and was getting spark. I have also installed a new plug.
I am getting fuel into the carb and the plug looked wet after trying to start.
Tonight I did find that the exhaust valve rod was not in the correct place, so the valve was not opening. I have put that back in place. but after all this, my battery went dead. it's on the charger now. I'll check it in the morning and see if I can get a responce from it.

Set the piston to top dead center, adjust the rocker arm nut until there is .005" between each valve and the rocker arm. Also, if the rocker arm came off the exhaust valve, make sure the tappet is still over the valve stem.
