Pull start on Briggs&Stratton

I have an 8HP Briggs&Stratton engine with a pull start. While trying to fix a problem I took the top off the engine and some coil flew all over the place. After I figured out the coil of metal, very thin and maybe a quater of an inch across, is what causes the pull cord, and probably something even more important that I don't know yet, to retract back into the engine after it is pulled. I can see a spot on the cover where one end hooks in, but the other end seems to just rest on a flat spot on the center. I really hope that makes sense. How do I put this back together, so I can once again use the pull start.

check the other end if it broke, it should hook into the recoil's pulley, what the rope winds up on.
