john deere 318 no spark

i inherited a model 318 lawn and garden tractor with an onan engine that had been sitting for 5-6 years in a shed. trying to get it started, no spark. changed points, plugs, condensor, new battery, nothing. have power to the primary winding of the coil. one dealer said no way to check the coil short of replacement (over $100.00 for the part). any thoughts??

the coil should be able to be tested, one way to try it on another engine...but for it though, i'm sure the points and all are set right, have you tried the coil without the kill wire? otherwise it just very well may be the coil.

To test the coil, connect the positive side of the coil to 12 volts, then connect another wire to the negative side of the coil. With a spark plug in the coil wire, and the plug touching ground (negative), touch the wire on the negative side of the coil to ground and then remove it repeatedly. This should produce a spark at the spark plug each time you remove the wire from ground.
