Mower oil backed up through carb.

Mower oil backed up through carb.
A long story short: My mower was put away in a position (front end down/back end up...not by me thank you ) that apparently caused the engine oil to backup through the carb and eventually out of the air filter. Needless to say it doesn't run now. Before I dive in and start taking things apart, is there any recommended way to fix this? The mower is only a year old (Tecumseh engine) and has never had a problem, so I rather not give it up. Thanks. -md

The way I cleared that up was to drain all the fluids and replace with new, the filter too. When you start it up it will smoke pretty bad then after the oil is burned out it should be fine.

so the spark plug was towards the ground? well take that out and make sure all oil is drained out of the combustion chamber, then like mattison said, drain your oil, fill it to the full mark, get a new air filter if paper, if its a foam filter, may be able to save it, unless thats old anyway. then just get a new one. move on to gas next, if its dark in color, or smells rancid, drain it. you should be able to get it started by rinsing the carb out with a little gas if its still quite oily, or carb cleaner. she'll smoke for a good little while, but should clear up. afterwards, take the spark plug back out and clean it up. and before you do start it after getting the oil out of the combustion chamber, dry the spark plug off to get the oil off.

Thanks for the info. I've followed both of your advice and all went well. I needed a little shot of starting fluid to kick it over and then as expected it smoked like crazy. Oil actually spewed out of the exhaust for the first few seconds so I let it run for a while and all seems good. Thankfully, it was a little less work than I had expected. Thanks again!
