Craftsman Snowblower Help

I have an older 9hp track drive Craftsman Snowthrower model #247.885690. I am having a problem with the drive system. It starts and I can engage the auger. However, when I engage the drive in lower gears it moves for short ways and then stops or hardly moves at all. Reverse seems to work okay but the higher gears (above 2) don't work at all. I think this may be related to an adjustment that was made to the gear selector shaft before I had it but am not sure. I do not have the owners manual. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

is the shift rod from the gear shift to the other lever straight? They get bent from hitting the tailgate of the pick up they ride in. Then it won't shift properly. Thats the biggest problem with forward only. Let me know how you do. Send private message as I don't read posts that have been answered.
