The blower starts up right away but when I start to move the choke it dies.

need more info on the engine, is it a vertical or horizontal?, what brand engine?

Regardless of engine brand or configuration, you have a lean carburetor condition. If the carburetor is adjustable, you may get lucky and open the main jet (on the bottom of the carburetor bowl) about 1/4 turn out. If it happens to be a fixed jet carb. then it's time to remove it and recondition it.
