Techumseh 8.5 HP Snwthrwr pull start not full recoiling after reattaching cord

I have a 8.5 HP techumseh motor on a yard machine snowthrower and the pull cord broke. i took the cover off and figured out how to re-thread the cord and tied a new knot on the end of the cord. Now when i pull start the engine, the pull cord does not fully rewind (~1.5 feet of cord still hanging) Does anyone have any hints or tips that they know about??

you didn't put enough preload in the cord. take it off, remove the starter handle, put about 3 or 4 more winds in the direction of pull and re-attach the starter handle. the cord should want to go all the way into the starter housing if you have enough winds in it. hint: pull the cord out about 2 feet and tie a slip knot so you can attach the handle.
