Replacement engines for snowblower?
What do you guys think about replacement engines for a 924036 Ariens. I like my other blowers with the Tecumseh SnowKing engines. That said, what are your views on the B&S Intek Snow, Robin-Subaru and Powertrain engines? I have been checking prices and have ruled out Honda and Kohler based on price, and don't see any Kawisakis or Onans that look applicable. Fire away!
PS, I have already solved the interference problem with the control for the blower outlet.

I would just buy a tecumseh. Briggs has too many changes in the last few years and parts are very expensive. Too much add on junk that's not required. (my opinion)
If you want trouble free simplicity go with a techumseh 9 HP. Other than that the top line is Honda for sure without a doubt.

No differing opinions? Since this machine has a mower attachment, I was considering other engines with an air filter. [Yeah, I know the Intek snow doesn't have a filter.] The Subaru Robin is most attractively priced in my area. Considering a 9hp w/ 120v electric start.

Yes, Ariens made several different accessory attachments for SnoThros. Rotary mowers, sidewalk brushes, rototillers and possibly a sickle mower. [Not sure on the last one.] The mower is older than the blower, but I am pretty sure it will fit. [If not, I have an older model that could be converted.] I could post a picture but don't know how.

I replaced a Tecumseh H50 with a B&S Intek Snow 7.5 on a 1970 Ariens. We've only used it a few hours but it's superb - quiet, powerful, starts instantly and easy on fuel. B&S Customer Service was more helpful than Tecumseh, and it bolted right into place.
Tecumseh had a lot of market share but B&S has made significant inroads. Most of the AYP machines have them, as well as Simplicity and Snapper. And Ariens has introduced a parallel line of machines with B&S OHV engines in lieu of Tecumseh.
The Robin-Subaru EX engines are an actual OHC engine, not OHV, and well regarded. But they don't have a "snow" config. Some people are replacing the old Tecumsehs with the Honda clones, for the simple reason that they're dirt cheap - about $125. I paid $260 for the B&S with electric start (not really needed) and an alternator.
I still have a Tecumseh L-head Snow King on my Ariens ST824 (HMSK80) and it works well, although it's noisy. I put a new carb on it this season - $55, rather than futz with the rebuild kit. As it turns out I would have had three months to rebuild it, given the amount of snow we've received....
