Tecumseh engine won't keep running.

I have a Tecumseh HS-40 on a Troy tiller. It starts but only runs a few seconds. Sounds good when running for those few seconds. When it dies, it's off immediately, no sputtering or anything. It dies like you shut the spark off. Smells like it's getting gas. Plenty in tank. Spark can be seen at the plug, but not always. Plug looks a little rich. Oil is clean, no gas smell. Don't think anything has ever been rebuilt.

any ideas.

Will it re-start immediately after it dies?

With a new spark plug, test for sufficient spark by laying such on the head and watching for constant spark. If not, you will have to eliminate all safety switches to isolate the ignition coil as the source or if it is in fact the coil itself, if this is the trouble, that is. Running for seconds generally indicates a fuel system related problem, however. And this would most likely be the carburetor being varnished.

It usually takes a minute or so to wait before it will start again.

Ok, then immediately after it dies, check for spark. Depending on whether or not you have spark, we can figure out which direction to go.

after checking the spark( like cheese said) if it stilled fired get a small squeeze bottle like one use for hair die ( needs a small opening) fill it with gas...start the engine again with the filter off...right when it is about to go dead squirt a little gas in the carburetor if it stays running loosen gas tank cap to where you know it is getting enough air to keep from forming a vaccuum. if engine stays running replace or clean vent holes in cap....if it still goes dead take off gas line to insure there is a good flow of fuel to carb....if thats is okay then you need to rebuild carb. it is best to soak carb in a carburetor solution for a couple of hours or more... make sure to break carb down completely including the welch plugs.....If it didn't fire after checking spark use a new cool plug and check firing again....if it fires your coil could be bad if it don't fire check your points for burning or oil, replace if nessary and regap. i hope this was helpful
