lawn mower maintenance
I have a Craftsman self-propelled mower and would like to sharpen the blades. Is there a safe way to tip it over without oil going into the muffler, or anywhere else. Turn it on it's side in a certain direction maybe?
Thanks!

I don't tip mine at all, I put it up on a couple 5 gallon buckets and crawl underneath. Makes for a nice easy oil change at the same time.

Same here, I either have it lifted, or handle bars to ground like I do for blades. this goes for when the gastank is almost empty, and cylinderhead is pointing away from the operator when they are at the handle bars, when putting the handle bars to the ground and putting em under something really low like a porch step, you have pretty easy access, and the oil will to the back of the engine, and won't leak out. If this is a older model where its the cylinder head towards you, or off to the side, cylinder head must stay upwards. The cylinder head is what the spark plug screws into.

Thanks for the advice. I just bought it new a year ago, so do you think the cylinder head is pointing away from the handle? is it ok to prop it up in the direction so the handle would be on the ground? I was originally asking if I could tip it to one side or the other, and didn't even think of pulling the handle down. Sorry, I don't have the model # off hand if that would help. thanks!

Many late Sears mowers don't have the drain plug under the shroud anymore ( many other brands also). My two year Sears
oil is drained with the mower on its side with the air filter housing up. At the same time the mower is on its side i remove the blade to sharpen. But check your manual .

As long as the cylinder head is pointing away from the operator, which it should be, handles to the ground to gain access to the blade.... as for the drain plug... mine has one.... 6hp b&s quantum.... I'm not sure on tecumseh or hondas..., but if you see a plug where the square head of a ratchet can fit, then you may have to resort to flipping it on its side to drain, and can go ahead and do the blade then.
