blade sharpening

Just checking to see waht the do's and dont's are for sharpening lawnmower blades. I have a couple that need to be sharpened but have never done it. I assume just taking a course file to it or using a benchtop grinder and follow the bevel. It looks like on both blades only about the first 5" on each end get sharpened.

Using a bench grinder and following the factory angle is best. Ideally, an 8" or larger grinding wheel will follow the factory specs best.

Lawnmower has gone crazy

I have a 18 HP Kohler engine in a 42 inch craftsman mower. I was mowing the other day when the engine started to really go fast. It made the mower go really fast also. I checked the belts and seemed ok. I turned it off and still accellerates very very fast. I kinda think it is the Govenor by looking at my owners manual, but really not sure. Does anyone have a suggestion? If it is the govenor, does anyone know where it is on this particular engine? briggs&stratton keeps shearing flywheel key

Recently purchased a used MTD riding mower with a 14.5h briggs&stratton OHV engine. I knowingly bought it with a "won't start" problem and determined that the flywheel key had been sheared off. I replaced the key and the engine fired up immediately, BUT after only a few moments of running perfectly, the flywheel key shears-off again. I've checked to make sure that the drive and mower deck belts do not have tension on them but continues to shear off keys.:wall: Any ideas or if anyone has been here before, I'd like to hear about it.Read More
