murray won't keep running 3.5hp engine
Hello'
I've got a murray lawn mower thats been a great 1 pull
runner for over 10 years. this year when I pulled it out
and put gas in it the mower it started and I mowed the
lawn without any problems. 1 week later I pull it out
and start it and it will run for about 3 seconds and die.
I've repaced the spark plug and taken the bowl off the
carb and cleaned it out and also made sure the bolt
that holds the bowl on was clean and the fuel passage in the bolt was clean and able to draw fuel. I'm stuck.
I can't believe that a carb would die without warning in a weeks time. It's funny how you get loyal to a machine but It's been
a great mower and I'm not gonna give up until it flatlines...
any ideas guys?
thanks!
Oh by the way I do winterize it every year, drain the gas etc..

Can you check to see if it has any spark? Could be a safety switch. Do you know how to TEMPORALY disconnect them? Engine #'s may help the pros on here. Probably not too serios, Roger.

Take another look at the bolt that holds the fuel bowl on. In an unthreaded section of the bolt near the end is a very tiny hole. This may be clogged, and this is usually the reason for the symptoms you described.

I double checked the bolt that holds the bowl on
and the small hole is clear and I was able to blow air through
it. When I was putting it back together I noticed a small
almost pin-hole in the primer bulb, would this cause it?
it's a techumseh 3.5 hp
it does start for a few seconds so I don't think it's a spark problem.
help! I'm afraid my lawn is gonna swallow my house

Well I pulled the bolt out for the 4th time and checked the
small hole, held it up to the sun and saw light through the tube,
I can't figure out exactly whats going on but I do know the engine is starving out.
it was only a $99.00 mower so maybe it's time for a new one.
ten plus years isn't bad. (10 dollars a year!)
but I still want to hear her run again.

could it be a breakdown in the govener?
The more I think about I've had this problem
a couple of years ago but it just didn't connect.
but all it took was a new plug and fresh gas.
and she ran all summer.
I've already replaced the plug and gas is new every year.
I can't find anything wrong with the fuel system
The way it starts is full throttle for about 2 seconds
and its like someone threw a kill switch and it dies.
HELP!!!

Not a governor problem. I think there's a problem in the carb still. Does your carburetor have a plastic emulsion tube? If so, you might pull it out and have a look at the o-rings on it. I bet they're gummy and not sealing.

Look in the hole that the bolt goes in (the one that holds the bowl on). If there is a whitish or red colored tube in there, you have the type I'm thinking of. Probably do. You may need to remove it and replace the o-rings on it. Sometimes the tube breaks upon removal, and you may have to replace it too.
