Craftsman Lawn Tractor-Transmisson Problem?
I have a Craftsman Lawn Tractor model 917.251560. I believe its around a 1996. I’m not sure as I bought it used and the manual and other papers were not available.
The other day the Bracket Idler failed. It simply broke in two pieces. I welded the bracket back together and reinstalled it. However, when I move the Motion Control Lever in either direction, nothing happens. The drive belt is OK and the Pullery Input is rotating. But, no motion when I move the lever. The parking brake is disengaged and the clutch is released. No motion.
When the failure first occurred, I towed the mower back to the barn and used my front end loader on my New Holland tractor to raise the lawn tractor in order to see beneath. When I did this, I noticed some fluid spilling onto the rear engine support bracket. I believe it came from the transmission but as I have not removed the fender or any of the other casing, I don’t know where the oil leaked from.
Where would this oil/hydro fluid be leaking from? Can this lack of motion be a transmission problem? If so, what do you think it is?

Maybe a basic question, but I must ask, did you put the bypass rod back in (the one you pull out to push/roll the mower)?
It may be low/out of oil in the tranny.

Yes. the free wheeling rod has been placed in the engaged position.
I'll check the fluid level in the transmission. However, the manual does not address the transmission fluid level as it indicates this has been done at the factory and no maintenance is required. It does not address the type of fluid either. I'll check the levels and assume regular hydraulic fluid is acceptable.

It is filled from the factory and not intended to be serviced, but they aren't meant to be tipped, so fluid can run out the vent. I'm not sure about fliud capacity, but I'd use Hyguard fluid available at john deere dealers.
