Starter rope broke

I have an MTD mower, Model # 11A-549K129. When I was starting the engine, the starter rope broke. When I took off the plastic cover on top, it looks like the housing where the rope resides is riveted down. How do I get into the housing where the rope resides, and is replacing the rope something that should be done by a service center? Thanks.

If you're here and you are then it can be done by you. You need to remove the whole blower shroud (housing) in order to service the rewind starter. You need to remove the gas tank and oil fill tube in order to get the shroud off. You then wind the spring as far as it can go, back off just enough to align the hole in the pulley with the hole in the shroud, feed the rope through and tie a knot. Good luck and let us know.
