Lawn-Boy spark problem

Lawn-Boy M21BMR / 5hp. No spark, pulled plug, tried pulling recoil starter while holding plug threads on motor finns, think magneto is bad. While removing , lost gap to magnets on flywheel. How do you set this gap, how do you verify bad magneto? No spark evident. Parts diagram shows CD ignition module ( 684049 ) AND alternator. Does it have an Alternator? I don't think so! Can someone tell me how to test for spark correctly? Use to start with a touch of starter fluid, then I knew it was a bad gas problem, now I don't know.

The air gap should be fine at .010". If you don't have feeler guages, just place a business card between the armature legs and the magnet on the flywheel. Let the magnet pull the armature to the flywheel with the card between them, and tighten the coil bolts. Then slip the card out.
