Briggs points question?

Question Briggs points question?

I have a 8hp B&S model 191707 type 0686 that I just pulled the flywheel off bacause I was getting no spark. I rotated the crank cntr. clkws. and the push rod that is supposed to push the points open does not move.Does it make any difference which way I turn the crank? Thanks for any help. Greg.

It shouldn't in terms of getting the rod to move.

Pull the plug, tape the plug wire out of the way and hold your hand over the plug hole. Spin the engine over a couple of times. Are you getting any compression blowing up through the plug hole?

If not you'll have to pull the pan and see what's going on with the cam.

It shouldn't matter which way you turn it as far as the plunger goes, like marbobj said. I would, however, suggest forgetting the points and just install a new coil. It comes with much more reliable and accurate electronic ignition. You can just leave the points there, forget them, they'll be of no concern from then on.
