LTX 1842 Troy bilt transmission???
While mowing today the troy bilt just stopped and will not move. I checked the belts and they were ok. It seems as if the pulley above the transmission is very hard to turn. Does anyone have any suggestions.
thanks,

Was it making a loud whining or whirring noise when you engage the transmission prior to this happening? Double check the belts to be sure both are tight. Then, remove the belt from the tranny pulley, put the tranny in neurtral and turn the pulley. If it doesn't want to turn, you probably have internal failure. If it turns freely, let us know, we'll go from there.

The transmission made no prior noise to this happening.
I took the belt off and put it in nuetral and the wheels turn freely but the pulley is VERY hard to turn.
thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like you're going to have to tear into it, or replace it. I'd pull it out and have a look inside. At this point, what can you hurt?

I think maybe I was looking at the wrong thing? I took all the belts off and everything turned OK.
I originally did not take both belts off the small pulley that is connected to the large pulley that is connected to the input shaft of the diffferential. if this makes any sense at all. Could a worn loose belt be the cause of the problem?? Whenever I engage the drive it smokes the belt and will not turn the wheels? This tractor only has 22.8 hours on it and I couldn't imagine it being a differential so soon. thanks for the help.

Put the engine to varidrive belt back on and crank it up. Does the belt still burn? If not, then put the tranny belt back on as well, and see what it does. If it's burning the belt, something has got to be pretty darn hard to turn.

more transmission trouble
I have a similar problem and Cheese mentioned a symptom that my tractor has. My transmission screeches loudly in forward and neutral but not in reverse. I pulled the drive belt and spun the trans pulley by hand. It makes the same racket. Should I rebuild the trans? The mower has 69 hours on it.
Thanks for the help!

The model number we would need to have a look at your set up, should be on a decal underneath the seat and will have digits and numbers mixed together.

Sorry about that.
Model# GAQ609G063 00373 (not sure if first digit is G)
Serial# 1C280H20332
I was planning to pull the trans drive pulley and see if I can get some oil down the hole but I won't hold my breath.
And it is a model 609, not a 605 as I had posted.
Just the newbie jitters, that's all.

You might make sure the brake isn't stuck. Other than that, it sounds like you may have internal tranny problems. I'd suspect the needle bearings at the input shaft. If you do determine it's an internal problem, pull it out and open it up. It's a simple transaxle.

It screeches in neutral and forward. If the brake were stuck, It wouldn't screech in neutral would it? I think the brake locks the axle.
I will try to lube the needle bearings before I pull the tranny.
Thanks

I pulled the tranny and I can see the top of the needle bearing casing. The shaft is also loose in the bearing. Can I pull it out and replace it from the top or do I have to open the case and drive it out?

Guys,
I had a small engine shop crack it open and they didn't find anything wrong and charged me 30 bucks. When I got it back the pulley didn't spin freely. They had forgot to put one of the two shim washers back on the input shaft. They denied it but gave me another washer. The input shaft was slightly rusty and scored. (They said it was fine.) I put the shaft in my drill press and buffed it with some fine sandpaper. I greased the shaft and the needle bearings and buttoned it back up.
Works like a champ now. No more screeching in forward and neutral. The leaves are doomed!
Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it. Did you fix the loose shaft problem? I also don't see how a missing thrust washer would cause it to bind, but it sounds like it's working anyway...

The shaft may still be a little loose but since the bearings looked good and the shop said in wasn't loose I just greased it and put it back together.
At least I know how to disassemble it now if the bearings get worse.
The shim washers under the pulley and the "E" clip hold the input shaft to the proper height to engage the forward and reverse gears. If it drops too low the input shaft gear grinds on something. (I'm not sure what it hits) When I tried to turn the shaft without the E clip in place I noticed the grinding and realized it must be held up the proper amount. The manual lists three thicknesses of washer and instructs people to check the end-play when selecting proper washer if trans is being rebuilt.
