P/Washer emmitting smoke

Troy-built p/w, B/S engine. Borrowed p/w from friend, he told me to change pump oil as well as reg oil since it has not been done. Followed instructions as read in book. It started just fine, and 10-15 secs later engine stopped and black smoke came out of exaust (lots of it). It also seemed that there is oil residue around exaust holes. Could I have put to much oil in? I should have just rented a damn p/w instead of waiting for 2 weeks to get this one. I hope I didn't fry it up. Please help. Much appreciated. Mike

Check the oil level. What's it say?
